a $600 car? are ya sure??

Now, here’s a story!  Looks like Volkswagon won’t be able to make them fast enough–good just to run around town. VW introduced a concept car that will get you back and forth to work on the cheap… $600 for the car…. 282 miles per gallon…

A one + one seater, however – Talk about cheap transportation…. Volkswagen’s $600 car gets 282 mpg–
According to Autoblog:   “A few years back, Volkswagen introduced a concept vehicle,” known as the VW 1L, “which derived its name from its stated goal of using just one liter of fuel per one-hundred kilometers traveled.”  The concept “actually beat its lofty goal rather handily as it managed to achieve a miserly 282 miles per gallon in testing. Much of its amazing fuel-saving capability stemmed from its 660 pounds (300 kilograms) curb weight. The concept also featured a single cylinder engine and a 1+1 seating arrangement down the center of the car.”
There aren’t many comforts in this car, however.  Autoblog notes, “Safety features like airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control aren’t lacking, but convenience items like air conditioning may be optional.”
Because of its light weight, VW says the car doesn’t need power steering or brake assist to perform up to the standards of a typical car.  In order to streamline the profile, it also doesn’t use mirrors — cameras show the driver what is beside and behind the car.
The aero design proved essential to getting the desired result.
The body is 3.47 meters long and just 1.25 meters wide, and a little over a meter high. The prototype was made completely of carbon fiber and is not painted to save weight.
The power plant is a one cylinder diesel, positioned ahead of the rear axle and combined with an automatic shift controlled by a knob in the interior. Safety was not compromised as the impact and roll-over protection is comparable to the GT racing cars.
Better than the Electric Car – 258 miles/gallon: IPO 2010 in Shanghai.
This is a single-seat car From conception to production: 3 years and the company is headquartered in Hamburg , Germany .
Will be selling for 4000 Yuan, equivalent to US $600..
Gas tank capacity = 1.7 gallons
 Speed = 62 – 74.6 Miles/hour Fuel efficiency = 258 miles/gallon
Travel distance with a full tank = 404 miles
US News and World Report adds, “Are production rumors realistic?  Maybe. Multiple sources say production would be limited, and the price is not yet known.  Car Magazine notes, “Expect a large amount of subsidy from VW, which hopes to reap a slew of headlines in the current climate.”
So there you have it, folks.  A $600 car that maybe…..just may be in  your MY future!!

hmmmm this could be my future car. :)

  2. Wow, the inside looks like the cockpit of an airplane! But with that “no A/C” thingie… I’m willing to bet that in AZ, that car’s not gonna fly.

  3. I love the concept myself! But I’d be afraid of driving in the same vicinity as an SUV…now maybe if we ALL down-size I’ll feel a little braver :-) It reminds me of something we’d have seen in the Jetsons! I do kind of like it! Debra

You can purchase AC units separately, but I think they can add it into it if you need heat/cold.

I would buy one in a minute. It is perfect for just running errands and going about town. Would not want it for a road trip.
