Here is the fifth Commandment, Exodus 20:12, “Honor thy Father and thy Mother”.
Here’s the word, honor.
Very simple….honor. You are to honor your parents because of their position over you. The Bible doesn’t say, please…it is a commandment…to treat with respect and dignity. Now, you may have had lousy parents. Many children grow up with absent, drunken or abusive parents. Maybe they were cruel, maybe your parents split up when you were young…however….your parent’s failure to be everything they should have been does not excuse us from obeying the Fifth Commandment…..honor your father and mother.
Though they may be far from perfect, your father and mother represent God in your life, and the way you respond to your parents may very likely be the way you respond to God.
— If you were angry and hostile towards your parents, you may be angry and hostile towards God.
— If you honor your parents despite their faults, you will likely honor God with your life.
One generation treats the next and our children learn to honor us as precisely as they see us honoring our parents. And if we want to be treated with that kindness when we get old, then we need to treat our own parents with the respect they deserve.
It’s not advice….it’s a commandment. Now, as you think about these words…..watch this…
